Postpartum Depression: Separating Myths from Facts

  Becoming a mother is one of life’s most profound experiences, but for many women, the postpartum period can also bring unexpected emotional challenges.  Postpartum depression (PPD)  is a real and serious mental health condition that affects a significant number of new mothers worldwide  including in Nigeria, yet it is often misunderstood, under-recognized, and stigmatized. What Is Postpartum Depression? Postpartum depression is more than the “baby blues.” While many new mothers experience mild emotional fluctuations in the first two weeks after childbirth, PPD is  longer-lasting and much more severe , involving persistent sadness, anxiety, fatigue, and loss of interest that can interfere with daily functioning and maternal wellbeing.
